CUT 2009 Results

Nation,

First major open tournament on the east coast has been completed. CUT 2009 had a familiar final, but offered a number of surprising performances, mostly by our Canadian squads.

One thing I was going to say regardless of what happened was that we as followers of the touring season really shouldn't jump to any conclusions on these tourneys. Some teams use these tourneys as tests of new systems, tryouts, and tune ups.

Ironside won the final with a 15-11 defeat over GOAT. The battle will continue throughout the summer, and Boston Invite should be the next showdown.

Here's the Canadian rundown:

Goat- 2nd
. Only one loss during the weekend, but some close games versus Bodhi and Mephisto

Mephisto- 3rd. A tough Saturday of pool play but they win a crossover with Pike and then defeat Phoenix to make semis. Lose semi to GOAT but if the 15-13 is any indication, they are really progressing as a team.

Phoenix- 6th Great weekend for the team, beating seed and finishing in the top 6. Surprise many and finish second in the pool. Losing in quarters to Mephisto and then on universe to PoNY for the 5th place game must be tough, but saturday wins over PoNY and much hyped Forge are huge.

Too Bad- 7th Harry Burkman does it again! Puts together a solid squad of semi regulars and pick ups, comes into the tourney ranked 15th, goes 3-0 in pool play and beats the 5th ranked team to sneak into quarters. You gotta give credit when it is due, and this team (I assume had some ex Zebra Muscles on it) deserves kudos.

Other Notes- Tournament TDS take Note
  • Forge comes in ranked 5th and wins only one game all weekend. That's very tough to deal with.
  • Colt .45 goes 0-5
  • Space Jam goes 0-5
  • Wiretap loses only one game all weekend, but it's the pre quarters one that mattered most.
  • Sons of Liberty wins only one game all weekend, but it is the pre quarters game that allows them to secure a tie for 7th.

Our loss in the 5th place game was to PoNY and not Pike. Pike lost their pre-quarter to Mephisto and was in the other bracket on Sunday.

Harry was not part of this version of Too Bad. They had a strong group of players formerly of Zebra Muscles and some regulars from Toronto as well.

It was a typo on the Pike mistake. Fixed now.

Harry wasn't even on the sidelines with the dogs?

No Harry was not present. I believe that Darren from Cazenovia was their captain for the weekend. They were a much stronger team then their seed indicated with many familiar players from previous versions of Zebra Muscles.

Mephisto is indeed progressing. Our farm team is more solid this year and both teams are working very hard. If we can stay free of major injuries, Mephisto will have strong showings at every tournament it will go to.

BTW, my last name is St-Amant. "St" is not a middle name so if you want to call me by my last name, use St-Amant. No hard feeling, I've already have been called "Stamante" by the Motel 6 personnel!

Eric,

I'm willing to add the hyphen and fix the constant St-Amant errors, but do I still have to resist spelling your first name Erik? You look like a viking sir!

Great to hear about the team's progress. Your b team captain (Etienne) was very patient last year. Now he has more talent to work with.
